Andropause
In recent years, many reports have appeared in the non-medical media about testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) being used to treat healthy aging men experiencing andropause, the male change of life. Do you remember the cover of Newsweek (September 2003)? The muscular back of a middle-aged man wore 2 testosterone patches to interest you in their story about replacing painful injections in the rear end with a new technology. Also, since Viagra entered the scene, many men now take testosterone to help their dwindling libidos keep up with their newfound, medicinal ability to maintain erections like they had in adolescence. Still further, from medical literature come stories praising TRT for its muscle-boosting, fat-busting effects on men from athletes to healthy-but-sedentary older men.
Regardless of all the positive publicity, there are an equal number of pessimists warning of the dangers of messing with your hormones because we don’t have enough long term studies that prove TRT is effective and safe! The negative reports are mainly from academic centers, health newsletters, and well-meaning but uninformed doctors.
So what’s it all about? And how can you separate hysteria from truth?
Your decision to begin TRT is both complex and personal. The well-documented beneficial effects of maintaining a youthful level of testosterone are available. We believe that the majority of evidence supports use of TRT for most healthy, aging men. But it is true that our knowledge is incomplete. This is normal in clinical medicine. Therefore, you must understand that many variables are factors in your choice to start TRT. The pages following present the issues that we, at Optigenics, believe you and every man must understand to make a really informed decision.
